Traffic Signals and Safety Lighting The Traffic Signal and Lighting group maintains 180 signalized intersections, various flashing beacons and a large underground interconnect system that supports coordination between the traffic signals. The Traffic Signal and Lighting crew averages over 2,000 calls annually in response to damage to the traffic signal infrastructure that includes over 36 miles of underground electrical circuits, 3,420 signal heads and 12,000 lamps.
All signalized intersections have been retrofitted with LED red lights. The red lights at a traffic signal are the highest energy consumers because they are in the “on” phase longer than green or yellow. Green lights are also being replaced as old incandescent lamps burn out and so far we have about 70% of the green vehicle indications changed out city wide to the more energy efficient LED lights. Yellow lamps burn far less minutes per year and last a very long time but we are replacing them whenever they burn out. Currently about 35% of the yellow indications are LED. The Pedestrian signals in the city were all originally built as neon transformer or later solid state fixtures and we have been retrofitting them for the last 10 years to LED and currently over 70% are LED. All new traffic signals built in the City are fitted with all LED lamps for both vehicle and pedestrian indications.
Forty-seven illuminated street name signs have also been retrofitted with energy efficient LED lighting. An additional forty-four signs are scheduled to be retrofitted during summer 2011. LED lighting decreases the energy consumption of each sign by approximately 50% when compared to traditional fluorescent illumination.
