Code Standards & GuidanceCourage Honor Service

Because conditions are not the same in every city or community, the State’s fire code anticipates the need for local interpretations and applications. The Fire Marshal, as the fire code official, is responsible for making the local interpretations and determining how certain code provisions will be applied. For the sake of consistency, and as a means of making developers and businesses aware of these local applications, the Prevention Bureau has created a series of Standards. Standards cover topics such as Christmas tree lots, fire department access and Knox Boxes, fire alarm requirements, and water supply rules.

Guidance Documents differ from Standards in that Guidance Documents are simply an explanation of certain Fire Code requirements. Guidance Documents do not interpret codes or provide local applications provisions; rather they provide a more detailed explanation of the specific requirements of commonly used but sometimes confusing Fire Code topics. Guidance Documents cover topics such as swimming pools, classroom displays of student work, and apartment emergency guides.
