Smoke Alarms in ApartmentsCourage Honor Service

Each unit is required to have one smoke alarm in every sleeping room or area and one in every hallway that leads to a bedroom.  If your apartment does not already have smoke alarms in every sleeping room, contact your management to have a battery-operated smoke alarm installed.

Building maintenance is responsible for general maintenance of the fire alarm system and the smoke alarms located in the individual units and common areas.  Do not remove the batteries from the smoke alarm for any reason.  It is your responsibility to immediately report low batteries or problems with smoke alarms to maintenance staff. A smoke alarm will sound a short chirp when the battery needs replacing.

Despite what you may think, you cannot smell smoke when you are asleep. A working smoke alarm provides an early warning of the need to immediately evacuate your unit.  The Fire District encourages you and your family to develop a fire escape plan in the event of a fire in your apartment.  The Escape Plan should include two ways out of every room (ex. door and window) as well as a designated Family Meeting Location outside and away from the building.  Learn how to create an Escape Plan for your apartment floor plan and then post it in a location where each family member can see it.  Practice your Family Escape Plan at least twice a year.
